Supporters from the Jupaland, Puntland, Makhir, Khatumo States, NFD and DDS are concerned that Al-shabaab militants groups – with proven ties to paramilitary Somali civil war groups (USC and SNM) – may already be targeting Daarood prominent politicians in Horn of Africa.
Targeted Daarood intellectual’s assassinations form part of the recent history of political life in Somalia. Daarood politicians in Somalia associated with the Patriotic Somali Union were systematically killed in the 2012-2015 by Al-shabaab(SNM)-Damul-Jadeed(USC) militants. An estimated 21 members of the Daarood Politicians, Journalists, and Intellectuals were murdered, including 11 local and Federal legislatures.
Al-shabaab groups have also recently issued death threats to Somali Federal System activists and supporters, and politicians, seen as friendly to the peace process currently underway in Somalia
In the past, questions regarding assassination incidents might have focused on “Madax jabis”- type assassination—exploding vehicles and even poisoned foods—this constitutes an assassination and what may be deemed a permissible targeted political killing. Needless to say this nationwide political target assassination from al-shabaab movement hasn’t gone unnoticed or unpunished.
There are reports of security and law enforcement officers across the country that refuse to bow to political pressure to stop their activities to get on board are being outright assassinated.
Al-Shaba’s use of targeted killing has been proven to lead to the protection of some clan politicians, and therefor deemed morally permissible through its adherence to the Somali civil war.
One of the most well-known targeted killings in Somalia’s modern times would be those directed from the Al-Shabaab(SNM)-Damuljadedd(USC) towards leaders of the Daarood Prominent political figures. Those targeted are often killed by non-conventional military means, and the targets of the attacks are not mostly combatants or are part of the military chain of command, the threat of the Al-shabaab(SNM)-DamulJadeed(USC) practice of targeted killing is consistent with a SNM-USC’s right to target specific Daarood intellectual individuals in the pursuit of future political and clan cleansing agenda started early 1990.
The Jupaland-Puntland-Makhir, Khatumo politicians in Somali federal parliaments discussed these targeted killings and “insisted on submitting to the government a draft resolution to stop militias and criminalise sectarianism”, Spokesperson said.
We are not prepared to be partners with a government that cannot protect its citizens,” he said, calling for legislature’s killers to be identified and prosecuted.
