Copenhagen, 20 November 2014 – Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, Nicholas Kay, Minister of Interior and Federalism of the Federal Government of Somalia Abdullahi Godah Barre, and Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Philippe Lazzarini, signed the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) allocation agreement providing US$3.5 million to support the Federal Government’s stabilsation activities in the newly recovered areas in southern central parts of Somalia.

“The release of this initial funding comes at an important time for Somalia as it continues to make significant security gains against the Al-Shabaab insurgency, and is pushing forward and recovering new areas,” said SRSG Nicholas Kay. “The launch of the PBF is a critical milestone in Somalia’s path to peace and stability. I welcome this important achievement.”

Support from the PBF focuses on addressing the needs of newly recovered areas, with an emphasis on ensuring support for caretaker administrations, reconciliation activities and police training and deployment.

In December 2013, the UN Secretary-General declared Somalia eligible to receive financial support through the PBF to assist the government in its peaebuilding and statebuilding efforts. The fund provides immediate and medium-term support, driven by the principles of national ownership and country-level decision-making.

The United Nations and the Ministry of Interior and Federalism will implement the projects.
